Kakao snags rights to publish hit Chinese game Onmyoji in South Korea | Pocket Gamer.biz


Messaging platform provider and publisher Kakao has claimed the rights to publish NetEase’s hit mobile game Onmyojiin South Korea.

The title has been a huge success in China and is said to have already racked up 200 million downloads since its launch in 2016.

Though NetEase does have other hits like Fantasy Westward Journey and Ghost, Onmyoji was a key factor in making the publisher the world’s top grossing mobile games company in October 2016.

Large userbase

According to The Korea Times, Kakao will localise the game for South Korean players and is currently working with more than 40 voice actors and actresses to get the game ready for release.

Its Kakao Talk mobile messenger platform is hugely popular in South Korea and will help NetEase put the game in front of its 40 million users.

“Tapping into the huge user base of the Kakao Talk platform, we can launch thorough marketing activities to Korean users and we feel this is our unique attraction as a game publisher in Korea,” said Kakao’s game business chief Namkoong Whon.
