Classic Beat ‘Em Up ‘Golden Axe’ Is the Next Game in the SEGA Forever Series, Out Now on the App Store




I’ve ironically been waiting forever to make the pun ‘I have an axe to grind with the SEGA Forever service’ upon Golden Axe’s [Free] release on the App Store. However, it turns out the company have radically improved the emulation of their classic titles recently, making great strides over the original haphazard efforts when the scheme first launched. While Golden Axe’s gritty side-scrolling beat ’em up action may be a radical departure from the vibrant platforming gameplay of Ristar [Free], the latest entry in the SEGA Forever series does share the vastly updated emulation of the latter title, which means anyone wanting to play one of 1989’s Genesis classics will have a suitable mobile iteration to try out on the go. As with the recent titles in the SEGA Forever initiative, Golden Axe is now available to download for free on the App Store, with an in-app purchase to remove advertisements (also available as a free download for anyone who owned the previous iOS version of the game).

Golden Axe is one of the more iconic of SEGA’s franchises, as despite the series being in purgatory since the appalling Golden Axe: Beast Rider in 2008, the abundance of ports of the classic Genesis games on numerous platforms means the scantily clad fighters have become iconic to many gamers in recent years. Featuring all the benefits that the Genesis version had over the original Arcade release, Golden Axe is a solid, enjoyable and admittedly dated look into the developer’s past, and is as playable today as it was in 1989, for better or for worse.
